How to get a cell phone

Cell phones can be very useful to keep in touch with people, yet most cell phone companies require at least a one-year, often two-year commitment of service. If you are planning to stay in the United States only for a semester or two semesters, nine months, you may have to consider restrictions that you may have. There are a wide variety of cell phone providers in the area, and they carry various cell phones and plans. Cell phone providers usually ask for your Social Security Card when you make a contract.

Pre-paid cell phones

A pre-paid cell phone is a cell phone that you pay by use. You do not have to make a long term contract to use a pre-paid cell phone. You purchase a phone at a discount store or cell phone stores, activate the phone according to the instruction, and are ready to make phone calls. When you run out of minutes or money, you can buy more minutes and continue to use. There are various types of phones and plans.

Calling Cards

International calls are very expensive when you call from land line or cell phone. A calling card is a phone card that you pre-purchase certain amounts of money or minutes. The rate varies across the country which you wish to call or the calling cards that you select. Calling cards can be purchased at local stores and convenient stores or on-line. If you search internet by entering “international calling card,” you will see hundreds of websites where you can buy calling cards on-line.  When you buy the card, you dial the toll-free number or local number printed on the back of the card, enter in a PIN number, which is also printed on the card, and then dial the number you wish to call. Once the card is out of minutes, you can buy more minutes or simply get a new card.

How to make international phone calls

1.       Dial International Call Prefix (US & Canada- 011)
2.       Dial Country Code
3.       Dial City Code (Area code)
4.       Dial Local Number
Ex. If you are calling from the U.S. to Mumbai, India, you will dial as follows;
011 (International Call Prefix) + 91 (Country code) + 22 (City code) + (local number)
